Bias Binding- How to Make

Duration

4:06 min

Bias binding is a versatile technique that involves creating a strip of fabric cut on the bias, which is diagonally across the grain of the fabric. This method allows for flexibility and curves, making it ideal for finishing edges and adding decorative touches to garments.1 However, making bias binding can present challenges, such as fraying edges and uneven cutting.

Different fabrics will present different challenges when making bias binding:

  • Sheer fabrics: These fabrics can be delicate and prone to snagging.  It's important to handle them gently and use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter to avoid damage.

  • Slippery fabrics: These fabrics can be difficult to work with, as they may shift and slide. Using pins or clips can help to keep the fabric in place while cutting and sewing.

  • Thin fabrics: Thin fabrics can be prone to fraying, so it's important to use a sharp rotary cutter or scissors and finish the edges with a serger or zigzag stitch.

  • Thick fabrics: Thick fabrics can be more difficult to cut and sew, so it's important to use a sharp rotary cutter or scissors and a strong sewing machine needle. A walking foot may also help.

  • Textured fabrics: Textured fabrics can be more difficult to cut and sew straight, so it's important to use a rotary cutter and ruler to ensure accurate cuts.

  • Fabric with a nap: Fabric with a nap should be cut in the same direction to ensure a consistent appearance.

To overcome these challenges and create perfect bias binding, you can use various tools and techniques. Some common methods include using bias binding makers, seam gauges, or simply by pinning pins into your ironing board.

In this tutorial, we will explore the method of creating bias binding by putting pins into your ironing board. This technique is simple and effective, and it can be used with a variety of fabrics. By following the steps outlined in this tutorial, you can create beautiful and professional-looking bias binding for your sewing projects.
