Invisible Zipper (roll in method)

Duration

This tutorial demonstrates a versatile technique that can be used with both a standard cording foot and an adjustable cording foot.

Key Steps Covered:

  • Preparing the Zipper: The first crucial step is to press the zipper teeth away to reveal the groove where your stitching should be placed. Stitching too far from this groove will result in a visible gap between the fabric and the zipper teeth, defeating the purpose of an "invisible" zipper.

  • "Rolling In" the Zipper Tape: This method eliminates the need for a back stitch at the bottom of the zipper, a common trouble spot for beginners. Instead of reversing stitches to secure them (which can create bulk and cause the zipper to seize up), you'll sew from the very edge of your seam allowance into your sewing line. This "roll in" technique creates a smooth, professional finish that's far superior to traditional methods.

  • Sewing the Zipper: Follow along as we demonstrate the correct stitching techniques for both presserfeet.

Tips for Success:

  • Fabric Considerations: Fabric choice will dictate if other steps need to be taken to sew in the zipper accurately.

  • Zipper Sizes and Types: This method works with any size zipper, regardless of the size of the zipper teeth or the type of zipper.

  • Troubleshooting Common Issues: Discover how to avoid common pitfalls like puckering, misaligned zipper tape, and uneven stitching.

This beginner-friendly tutorial will give you the answers as to why your zippers may come out misaligned, warped or puckered and how to avoid it.
