Self Bound Rolled Seam

Duration

3:02 min

A self-bound seam is a versatile technique that provides a clean and professional finish to your sewing projects. It's particularly useful for lightweight fabrics that are prone to fraying.

How to Create a Self-Bound Seam:

  1. Trim One Seam Allowance: Trim one side of the seam allowance to reduce bulk.

  2. Fold the Remaining Seam Allowance: Fold the remaining seam allowance to the wrong side of the fabric.

  3. Topstitch: Use a small stitch length and a presser foot with a guide to topstitch the folded edge in place.

Where to Use a Self-Bound Seam:

  • Seams in Lightweight Garments: This technique is ideal for sheer fabrics like chiffon or silk.

  • Inside Seams of Garments: It can be used to finish seams that are not visible from the outside, such as side seams or shoulder seams. This seam finish is not suitable for finishing curved seams.

Tips for a Perfect Self-Bound Seam:

  • Use a Small Needle: A smaller needle will allow you to stitch closer to the fold, creating a neater finish.

  • Press Carefully: Pressing the folded edge will help to create a crisp and defined seam.

  • Choose the Right Fabric: Lightweight, non-stretchy fabrics are best suited for a self-bound seam.

By mastering the self-bound seam, you can elevate your sewing skills and create beautiful, professional-looking garments.
